Interview Advice

For many Senior Managers or Directors interviewing will come naturally and will be an easy process that they have successfully completed many times previously. However, for some individuals, Entrepreneurs or first time manager, interviewing is new to them and have very little experience of owning the process. Davenport provides assistance in coaching your decision makers how to lead the process and present there selves and the business in a professional, confident and responsive manner.


The main things to remember when interviewing are –


  • Do not keep your candidate waiting in reception past the time of interview.
  • Be smart and well presented.
  • Ensure that you have read the CV of the candidate you are interviewing before the interview and make notes of relevant area's that you wish to probe.
  • Ask 'competency based' questions i.e. "give me an example of …." Or "tell me about …"
  • Ensure that you sell your company and the opportunity.
  • Be honest, if the candidate ask for feedback give a honest opinion of their performance during your interview.

Every candidate that interviews with your organisation is a valuable marketing tool – even if they are not suited for your company, ensure that you are doing the following –


  • Provide thorough feedback and advise on areas that they need to work on.
  • Sell your company to them, ensure that they want to work for you even if they are not skilled to do so.
  • Ensure that you do not keep candidates hanging on for a decision –first interview to offer shouldn't take anymore than 3 weeks.

A background check or background investigation is the process of looking up and compiling criminal records, commercial records and financial records of an individual.

  • Gaps in employment history.
  • Identity and Address Verification - whether the applicant is who he or she claims to be. This includes verification of the candidate's present and previous addresses. Also includes a money laundering, identity and terrorist check and one to verify the validity of passports.
  • Whether an applicant holds a directorship.
  • Credit History - bankruptcies.
  • Criminal History Report .
